The way that the mutated wolf and crocodile (the latter of which is only depicted in full during the massive Chicago-set section in the third act) attack people, buildings and anything else in their paths unquestionably calls to mind broadly cheesy FX in direct-to-DVD movies. The mustache-twirling bad guys are well met by their monstrous creations, though only the special effects surrounding George hold up to any serious scrutiny. And it’s through her that we get wonderfully clunky lines like “Do you remember that military contracting group we bought last year?” It’s through her that we learn that Energyne, the company that the brother and sister run, is responsible for Kate’s brother’s offscreen death.

But often, how we learn about those personal reasons is through dialogue that Akerman has to deliver as if she’s reading a Wikipedia page. Both Davis and Harris’ character Kate have personal enough reasons to want to help George and stop the nefarious brother/sister duo (Jake Lacy and Malin Akerman), whose company created the pathogen that infected the animals. (When Davis sees that the mutated wolf has sprouted wings extending from its front to back paw on each side, he dryly says, “ Of course the wolf flies.”) Part of why Rampage is fun, aside from Johnson’s presence, is in how the film gleefully indulges in disaster-movie tropes as well as heavily expository dialogue. While Rampage is clearly derived from a nonsensical premise, it’s got a good sense of humor about itself. Bad dialogue, technical mumbo jumbo and clumsy exposition make this movie feel bloated. Again, it shouldn’t really matter for a movie like this, but the clichés abound here.It’s just a bit too flat before its explosive ending kicks off, and it’s a real shame. So as well as not being fun enough, Rampage isn’t funny enough, or silly enough (though Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s over the top southern gentlemen shtick is very nearly there). Even with George ‘n’ Rocky’s sign language moments, gags are thin on the ground, so if you want some Jason Statham-type winking at the camera, well… you ain’t getting none. If you’re hoping for the same from Rampage – based on the classic ‘80s arcade machine of the same name – alas, there aren’t that many jokes here. The relationship between George (the killer albino ape) and The Rock (The Rock) is really very cute.His screen presence cannot be denied, and even with Rampage’s many, many flaws, The Rock remains The Rock. It’s a film starring the man, the myth, the legend that is Dwayne Johnson, so I’m practically obliged to remind you that The Rock is a very charming man.

If you’re in the mood for buildings falling over, helicopters bursting into flames and The Rock lobbing grenades down the gullets of ginormous, vicious beasties, book your tickets now. Giant angry animals smashing up buildings, what’s not to love? The wolf is genetically spliced with a flying squirrel, so it can glide, while the crocodile has a spiky mace on the end of its tail, perfect to bash tanks into a river, all in superb CGI.
